Like the roots of a tree, a strong foundation is vital to the integrity of your structure.

To feel grounded there must be a core connection between the earth and your body starting from the feet, to the ankles, up to the knees, through the pelvis and on to the tailbone. Standing pose will help create awareness of alignment in the body and connection to the earth. It also improves circulation, breathing, and gives you energy.

Although I’m only a yoga practitioner, not a yoga teacher, I know that in yoga there are many standing poses, but this particular one (tadasana) sets the foundation for all other postures.

I actually use the pose as a meditative practice to ground myself at the start of the day or a reflective observance at the end of the day. I also use it as pelvic floor strengthener.

To begin start by focusing on your breath and bring your attention to your body.

Step 1: Stand tall with your feet together and chin slightly lifted. Look straight ahead.

Step 2: Place your arms down by your sides, with palms open, and facing out. Roll your shoulders back and lift your chest.

Step 3: Feel all four corners of your feet ground into the earth and try to find that core connection by squeezing your pelvic floor (like you’re holding your pee).

Step 4: Close your eyes and breathe into the nose and out of the nose.

Step 5: Count to a hundred before opening your eyes.
